ARE YOU MAKING THESE CRUCIAL CLAY FACE MASK MISTAKES?

Our love for Face Masks has grown into an obsession. However, if your #selfcare routine involves a clay face mask you may have asked yourself 'am I doing this right?’ There are crucial mistakes made when many start their journey in using a dry clay face mask and we’re here to help out.

Here we discuss the crucial mistakes which are made when it comes to using a dry clay face mask.

 1. Don’t just jump in. Assess, select and prepare your skin.

The same as you would with any skin care product, you should be choosing your dry mask based your skin type and concern. Don’t just turn to the latest ‘must have’ that’s been released. There are many different types of clays with wonderful mineral rich properties to help treat and support different skin types and concerns. Before thinking about applying a face mask, you first need to start with clean skin. Remove all make-up and exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells, unclogging and clearing pores. This allows for the nourishing benefits of the clay to penetrate deeper to extract dirt, bacteria and blackheads from deep within the pores

2. Choose your utensils before mixing and applying.

When mixing a clay face mask, we recommend not using a metal spoon. As some clays can absorb metal, becoming less effective, you don’t want to risk this happening by using a metal spoon. Instead, trying mixing in a small wood, plastic or glass bowl. Using a facial brush to mix the clay and water will keep the process less messy and helps to spread the mask evenly over the skin.
As with many skin care products, less is more. Lathering on a super-thick layer of clay won’t result in a more effective masking session. You should only need to apply an even layer of the wet clay mixture to clean, dry skin to reap the benefits it has to offer.

3. Keep an eye out and don’t leave it on too long!

When you use a clay face mask, you don’t want to wait until it has begun flaking to rinse it off your skin. In understanding the drying process, we know first when the mask still appears wet on the skin, it is absorbing all the beneficial minerals from the clay. As it begins to dry, it cools and contracts, stimulating blood flow, giving that fresh tingling feeling to the skin. If you notice that the clay has begun to crack and flake from the skin, it’s been left on too long, reaching the point where the clay in now absorbing moisture from the surface of the skin.
Check your mask before you start removing. Have a look in the mirror, generally the clay face mask will appear lighter in colour as it dries and should still feel sticky to touch. When you reach this ideal combination, it’s now time to wash it off.

 4. Don’t just scrub it off, gentle remove.

You reach the point when it’s time to take off your mask, wet a washcloth with warm water and gently wipe the mask off in circular motions. The warm water re-hydrates the clay, lifting it form the skin and finely exfoliating whilst being washed away. Once you’ve made sure all of the mask has been removed, take a clean, dry towel and lightly pat your skin until it’s just slightly damp.

5. Finish with hydration.

Removing the mask doesn't mean you aren’t finished with your skin care routine just yet. It is the best time to follow with a moisturiser, to reduce any drying to the skin. So, once you’ve rinsed off your face mask and patted the skin dry, apply a lightweight moisturiser to lock in additional hydration.
